Obama: The first-term senator plans to double the federal research budget and invest in green technologies, programs aimed at creating stable jobs in the clean-technologies sector. Obama wants to make the U.S. a world leader in green technologies. He has also told the auto industry he will help them retool their factories to be able to make fuel-efficient cars in the U.S.
McCain: The fourth-term senator supports programs aimed at retraining workers so they can stay competitive. He also supports an overhaul of government unemployment insurance programs to "modernize" the system to retrain, relocate, and assist workers in getting new jobs.
