Energy/Gas Taxes
McCain: McCain wants to suspend the federal gas tax of 18.4¢ per gallon between Labor Day and Memorial Day to help curb fuel costs. He also supports suspending additions to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, saying the reserve's levels are high enough and continued contributions are simply pushing up prices by commanding supply. Finally, McCain wants to reduce ethanol subsidies, tariff barriers, and sugar quotas, saying that, on balance, they hurt America.
Obama: Obama calls such gas tax holidays a mere "gimmick" that will provide only limited relief and offer more incentive to drive. He also opposes suspending the tax because it would drain money from the Highway Trust Fund that's needed to upkeep the country's roads. He has proposed economic relief through tax breaks. As for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, Obama would stop adding to it at current prices and, like McCain, would not tap into it to pump more barrels into the economy.
