War in Iraq
Obama: A longtime critic of the war, Obama would begin removing troops to prod Iraqi politicians into devising solutions for governing the country. During the 16-month troop drawdown, Obama plans to conduct a "tough and principled" campaign of assertive diplomacy with Iraq's neighbors, including Iran and Syria, to get their help in quelling the violence in the country—or at least to stop arming militants.
McCain: McCain wants to keep U.S. forces in Iraq until the country is stabilized. He sees U.S. troop withdrawals as both a moral and strategic mistake. An Iraq without American troops, McCain believes, would descend into chaos, destabilizing the region. In addition, he has called on the international community to use economic sanctions to put more pressure on Iran and Syria to stop arming insurgents in Iraq. Countering Obama, McCain has agreed with President George W. Bush's comments that talks with Iran are tantamount to appeasement.
