McCain: McCain believes his long-term plan would serve in the short term, too. He wants to slash the corporate tax rate from 35% to 25%. He's also proposed allowing first-year businesses to expense equipment and investment, as well as a permanent research and development tax credit.
Obama: Obama's plan gives tax breaks of up to $1,000 to middle-class families. He also wants to implement a second economic stimulus package worth $50 billion, which includes a $10 billion foreclosure prevention fund, money to extend unemployment insurance beyond the normal 26 weeks, and support for ailing state governments crippled by the decline in tax revenues. The senator also wants to increase government funding for research and green technologies to create more jobs.
