Over-worked? I am not sure about you, I used to work 12 hours / day in one of the high tech company in the US. We were called non-exempt employee which means that we do not get a dime for over time. Yes, many of the Chinese workers do work more than 8 hours / day. As my own experience show that the same is true in the developed world such as those in the US. When I worked for my own business, I worked 14 or more hours / day and I had many sleepless nights.
Low pay. Well, who are you comparing with? A shop floor labor in the US gets about $15 / hour. His Chinese counter part gets about $0.50/ hour. However, to make $15/hour in the US, you need to have a high school diplomat and he/she has to drive to work every day. He has to pay for his own food and lodging. After the expense, an US labor gets almost nothing in saving. His Chinese counter part gets free housing and food from the employer. So after all, these workers do save and many of them go back to their hometown and use their seed money to start their own business. Please go and talk to your friends or any body you know in the US who are labors and asked them how much savings do they have after working for 5 years, and then you will know.
Poor working condition and living condition. The building that I worked in the US has no window. Do you know why? The lights are on all the time. Because the Industrial Engineers know that we would see the sun goes down as it would affect our productivity This factory is working 24/7. Most of the factories that I visited in China are very clean. The owners know that a clean environment means productivity which in term means more money for the employer. For those who provide poor working condition, I’d suggest them to spend some money and send their engineers to Tsinghua to get educated for the 5s principles. Again, competition and education are good.
What China offers today is opportunities for both rich and poor alike. The promise is: as long as you work hard, you have a future. Yes, there are corruptions, unfair competition and so you call the exploitations. But look at the faces of the Chinese people, you can tell that they have hope.
I drive in Beijing. So I know a few mechanics. My friend Mr. Wang came to Beijing 8 years ago and he worked in a car repair business. Growing from an apprentice to the chef mechanic in a small shop. Today, he is the proud owner of his own car repair shops. Never mind that he does not speak much Putong Hua. He gets my car repaired at a reasonable price. It is the people like him make me believe that China has a future and people inside China have future.
