The government is not in the business of running insurance companies. AIG is. So if you are to let AIG run, please don't meddle with how it's run.
AIG is bound by legal contracts to pay out the money. They can ask for a new law prohibiting such bonuses, which could have been done by the stimulus bill, or they can break the law and cause a number of lawsuits, or they can abide by the law, and pay out the money.
Which one would you choose? If it were me, I'd pick the first one. Now that the stimulus plan did not include such clauses, I have two choices left.
Would you pick it for me?
Would you spend the money on legal defense, or would you spend it on the bonuses?
