Thanks a lot. Your framework analysis really provides clarification for this subject. Particularly, I really like your answer to Q3. In the U.S., as long as you pay attention to and follow the protocol, you really have to be comfortable with you being different (i.e. name, skin color, religion and culture) than the rest of the crowd.
On your first question, just like what you said, the answer varies in many ways. Mainstream is such a vague terminology that it really needs to be defined on a case by case basis. For example, we can probably ask questions like what is the mainstream in business, in politics, or in religion, or even what is the mainstream in the industry, in the company. Answer to each of these questions would be very different, although same frame analysis could apply.
A short version of your comments, based on my understanding, is understand the protocol, power and politics of your social circles, understand yourself, and position yourself. The mainstream question really doesn’t matter.
