Ill omen at Morgan Caz?
THE departure of Nick Wiles from JP Morgan Cazenove is a worrying omen for the future of the new joint venture. Mr Wiles was considered one of the brighter stars at Cazenove and his decision to leave the firm just three months after it joined forces with the American investment bank will have upset colleagues and clients.
The fact that he has chosen to join Morgan Stanley has buoyed morale at that house’s Canary Wharf offices, as the London bankers try to ignore the battle being waged in the United States to oust the chairman, Philip Purcell.
Sceptics had doubted how the gentelmanly firm of Cazenove might adapt to the new environment but optimists had contended that as long as David Mayhew — the Cazenove chairman who is now chief executive of the joint venture — remained at work, clients and staff might stay loyal. Mr Mayhew remains the confidant of choice for many FTSE 100 chief executives. But Mr Wiles is also strong on client relationships and there must be fears at JP Morgan Cazenove that some will choose to follow him to Morgan Stanley.
There have already been some client defections as the inevitable conflicts of interest brought about by bringing the two firms together have surfaced. Even before the deal was consummated, ITV and HBoS decided to defect, as did several smaller companies.
Cazenove had previously managed to have client relationships with companies which were obvious rivals without there being apparent nervousness over conflicts. However, attitudes towards the integrated investment banks are more wary. Some doubt whether the major investment banks would recognise a conflict of interest if it hit them in the face, so long as there was money to be made. They marvel, for instance, at the way in which Goldman Sachs appeared to see no problem in being involved on almost every side of the recent transactions involving the New York Stock Exchange.
In recent days, the decision of JP Morgan Cazenove to act for Malcolm Glazer in his bid for Manchester United has raised some eyebrows. The Man Utd chairman, Roy Gardner, had made clear that he was not enthusiastic about the deal. He just happens to be the chief executive of Centrica, a Cazenove client, now client of the joint venture. After the bank’s decision to back Mr Glazer, some wonder whether Centrica will be a client much longer.
