JP Morgan Cazenove hit by two defections

TWO senior bankers at JP Morgan Cazenove have defected to rival firms only three months after the formation of the joint venture between the American bank and the British brokerage.
Nick Wiles, one of four vice-chairmen, is joining Morgan Stanley, and John Lydon, a vice-president in equity capital markets, joins Deutsche Bank.
The departures, particularly that of Mr Wiles, come as a blow for JP Morgan Cazenove as it struggles to maintain its franchise in corporate broking, amid claims that the joint venture creates too many conflicts of interest.
Mr Wiles, who had been at Cazenove for nearly 20 years, is believed to have tried to leave six months ago — just as the joint venture was being formed.
However, David Mayhew, the Cazenove chairman, is thought to have persuaded him to stay. Mr Wiles was head of Cazenove’s industrials team and had been mooted as a possible successor to Mr Mayhew.
Mr Wiles’s client list included utilities such as International Power and Centrica and he also advised RMC when it was bought by Cemex, the Mexican cement maker.
One source claimed that Mr Wiles changed his mind after the controversy over Malcolm Glazer’s successful bid for Manchester United.
The football club was a key client of Cazenove, but the hostile bid was financed by JP Morgan. Sir Roy Gardner, the club’s chairman, was a client of Mr Wiles.
Mr Lydon came through the JP Morgan side of the business.
