I am in a long career transition process from Hi-Tech (wireless telecom) to Hi-Touch (farming) field. If our company gone down in next 10 years, I might still have a mean to make for living and supporting my family in the end. I don't think it's suitable for me to follow the same trail as our first or second generation of Chinese immigrants - i.e. open restaurants or cleaning shop or gas station or grocery stores. To use the expertise I acquired in the Hi-Tech field and apply those to the Hi-Touch field is one of my passions. Not sure this is a right path or not, just experiment it right now.
Back to your question of growing, I do not know where you live; it’s hard for me to guess what the problem is. Anyway, there are a few basic elements once it comes to grow things – sun, water, soil, nutrient and type of the corps/vegi/fruits/nuts.
There are a few things you can control while some are not in terms of farming. If the field is already there, you don't have the choice of selecting soil type, hours of sun shine and micro weather condition of your field. However you can control the watering, adding nutrient, improving the soil, improving the drainage and choosing the right crop/vegi/fruits/nuts to grow in your area.
Ever since I get into this field, I still can not believe that as a farmer you have to know so many things just to make things right.
