The non-alphabetic Chinese writing system was a major factor in the decline of China vs the western countries since the 15th century. Printing press coupled with the alphabetic scripts created the Renaissance upsurges of western education, art and science. Chinese ancient inventions, such as compass, gun powder, paper etc. were not language-related. Each generation of Chinese had to re-invent what might have existed before, because Chinese was daunting to learn and even more difficult to do research with. There is no close translation for the word 'research' in Chinese. The current translation is 'yanjiu' (研究),which literally means grounding the stuff into powder to find out its nature -- a very non-symbolic process indeed. If you go to a Chinese bookstore to look for a book, even if it is found on the computer, you will still be frustrated by the fact that books are arranged randomly on the bookshelves. For Chinese, search is very difficult, research would be unwieldy indeed. Chinese have to endure the daily chaos created by the disorderly Chinese scripts. Chinese is like a computer program that requires a long boot up time. If one consider young inquiring minds are more creative, then a large portion of this creative period would have to be devoted to learning the Chinese language. All these linguistic handicaps disappear if Chinese change their language tool, as in the case of many Chinese scholars who excel in an English environment.
