I agree with your point. But just casual English learned in social setting such as friendship normally is not good enough for advancing to a senior position in your career.
Sometimes, it is ok to use certain verbage in casual conversations, but off limit in a formal business setting. Most top tier MBA programs offer specific training in this area. To be able to achieve "articulate" level of communication is one of the keys to career success.
Many 1st generation CBA (Chinese born American) neglect this in their career development, even if they have achieved much success in other aspect of life living in America.
My point is that you need to balance social and culture understanding as well as professional training to realize your full potential of learning the best English skill possible.
