* All The President’s Men *
In 1972, Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, intrepid reporters for the Washington Post, broke open a scandal that changed the face of politics forever. Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford brought plenty of personal charisma to the lead roles, but it was Jason Robards, as crusty editor Ben Bradlee, who took home an Oscar. Everyone knows the outcome of the Watergate affair, but Alan J. Pakula’s investigative journalism yarn is still a gripper.

* Cat Ballou *
It’s 1894 and hangin’ day in Wolf City, Wyoming. What could have turned an innocent schoolmarm (Jane Fonda) into a pistol-totin’ train robber with her neck in a noose? Lee Marvin won an Oscar for his rousing portrayals of both drunken gunslinger Kid Shelleen, who could easily miss the side of a barn, and his evil twin, Silvernose. Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye are strolling balladeers in this rollicking spoof of the Old West.

* Dial M For Murder *
A man plots the perfect murder of his wife, but since this is an Alfred Hitchcock thriller, things don’t go according to plan. Londoner Ray Milland is the devious husband bent on inheriting the assets of his wealthy spouse (Grace Kelly). Fortunately, her American boyfriend has a suspicious mind. Based on a successful Broadway play, the master of suspense shows what a miracle worker can do with a few characters in a confined space.

* Love Story *
A good-looking, rich boy (Ryan O’Neal) from Harvard falls for a good-looking, poor girl (Ali MacGraw) from Radcliffe. Their post-graduate romance/marriage is an ill-fated struggle. His disapproving father disinherits the couple and she comes down with a mysterious, movie star disease. You’ll never have to say you’re sorry for shedding a tear at this wildly popular melodrama from Erich Segal’s wildly popular bestseller. Oscar-winning music by Francis Lai.

* Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde *
The eternal struggle between good and evil, as conceived by Robert Louis Stevenson, makes for a handsome Hollywood chiller. Spencer Tracy plays the doctor who can’t resist messing with mother nature. Enter his horrific alter ego, Hyde. Originally, Lana Turner was to play the tarty barmaid, with Ingrid Bergman slated for the role of Jekyll’s ultra-sweet fiancée. Director Victor “Gone With The Wind” Fleming, at Bergman’s urging, reversed the casting.

* Mr. Smith Goes to Washington *
Stand up and cheer! This patriotic, eloquent and warmly humanistic drama from Frank Capra glorifies a crusading freshman politician doing battle with the forces of evil in a corrupt government. 1939 was a banner year for memorable movies. Mr. Chips (Robert Donat) beat Mr. Smith (James Stewart) for Best Actor, but the original screenplay of this rousing saga of a babe in the senatorial woods was voted the year’s top contender.
