The impact of advancement in biotechnology on our life
in the past and in the future. - About drugs from our
body, human cloning, and personalized medicine
By: Dr. Jing-Shan Hu
Since the founding of biotechnology industry more than
two decades ago and the opening of genomics arena more
than a decade ago, the technology advancement in
biology has revolutionized the approach to understand
and treat diseases. Drugs based on components made by
human bodies (proteins, genes, stem cells) have been
successfully developed or on their way to clinical
application. Meanwhile, human cloning is no longer
something unlikely. It also becomes more and more
apparent that different individuals could respond to
the same therapy differently, most likely due to the
subtle difference in the genetic makeup of each
individual. One person’s medicine can be another
person’s poison. Therefore, personalized medicine
will be important for future drug design and patient
treatment. How and why the advancement of
biotechnology would make an impact on our life will be
discussed at this session.
Jing-Shan Hu received her B.S. degree in Biochemistry
from Peking University. Through CUSBEA program, she
enrolled in Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences of
University of Texas at Houston and M.D. Anderson
Cancer Center where she obtained Ph.D. degree in
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Following
post-doctoral training at Harvard Medical School, she
worked as a Scientist and project leader at Human
Genome Sciences Inc., the biopharmaceutical company
pioneered in functional genomics. She is currently
Manager of Toxicology/Pharmacogenomics of Affymetrix
Inc, the world leader in genomics technology industry.
Jing-Shan Hu has 15 publications and 16 patents.

Transition from State Socialism: Russia and China
By: Dr. Sujian Guo
Gradual and partial reform without a long-term goal
and a comprehensive plan was the key feature of
economic reforms in China, which demonstrated a
different pattern of transition as compared to
formerly communist countries in Russia and Eastern
Europe - "neoclassical" big bang or radical approach.
This talk will attempt to compare the transition from
socialism in Russia and China along some key
dimensions and explain why China adopt a gradual and
experimental approach to the economic transition.
Dr. Sujian Guo is currently an assistant professor in
political science at San Francisco State University.
He received his PhD in political science from
University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1999. His
research interests have focused on China/Asian
politics, communist and post-communist studies,
democratic transition, and political economy of East
and Southeast Asia. He has published more than 20
articles both in American and Chinese journals. He is
the author of the book Post-Mao China: from
Totalitarianism to Authoritarianism? He is now working
on his second book entitled The Political Economy of
Asian Transitions from Communism. Dr. Guo is the
editor of Journal of Chinese Political Science, a
refereed academic journal published by the Association
of Chinese Political Studies. Dr. Guo received his M.
A. from Department of International Politics
(International Politics), Peking
