lack of trust towards society and government. There is never a government or a legal system really enforces justice and protects individual regardless of his class.
There are only two entities exsit always: the tyrant and its citizens.
When living standards deteriorates, citizens have to protect themselves aganst eachother (by distrusting and undermining) inorder to survive in such lawless society. (unless it goes extreme, the tyrant is always the last to attack) while maintaining maximum order with customary values ( kongfuzi).
The Culture Revolution destroyed such values. and DengXiaoPing replaced them with Fame&Fortune. Such replacement successively maintained order but escalated vicious competition amid citizzens.
The fundamental reason is Law and Order. such concept invented as rudimentary 2000years ago by Li Si and emperor of Qin but became extinct later on.
When Cusotomary Values are absent, Law and Order shall be enforced. Then we build values upon it like we did 2000 years ago (独尊儒术）.
