I worked in MPEG2 in Cable side of the world. I am still
in US, thus the name squirt - the little sea turtle
in "Finding Nemo" that looking forward to go back one of
these days.
But I know some of few projects on IPTV related stuff
- including the $4 billions project with Verizon/Motorola.
Here's my 2 cents:
IPTV over DSL in US is a way for the phone company
to defense the Telephone line. They are lossing
traditional phone costomers to VOIP+Cable and
cell phone. They are looking for way to make
customers stick to them (reduce the customer turnover).
IPTV is one way to do it. That's why Verizon
put so much $ on that IPTV project.
For China market: I think IPTV + VOD/EOD maybe a
way make DSL customers subscribe to the idea. I know
personally that the VOD/EOD got very good customer
receptions in the Comcast (US Cable company).
Instead of getting the broadcast contents in China,
maybe licensing a lot of TV shows - Home make or aboard
and put them on a server farms in the DSLAM headend and
let the customers select from Hundred/Thousand of shows
at anytime they want. Maybe Chinese customers are more
willing to buy into that approach.
Turn on your IPTV settop and immidiately you see
hundred of TV shows on the list.
- Learning English / Chinese (for the foreigner).
- Learning everything (Kung Fu, Math for Kid, etc)
- Learning computer/technology.
- Learning driving a car.
- Discovery channel show ( I love the "Dirty Jobs".) .
- HBO (if you can afford it.)
- Travel shows. ( If I plan to go to Hawaii/Europe/
ShangHai/HongKong next week, let us see
travel programs for that first
before we got there.)
- Technology shows - Let's see what's new in CES.
Nice if customers can post they own contents on
the servers.
- Shop at Home on Demand. If I like to buy watch/car/
computers/HDTV, etc, let me see the 3-5 minutes
infomercial for them before I start shoping.
Nice thing about this approach:
The technology is easy since the Cable VOD/EOD
has similar setup for it already.
License TV shows is easier than licensing the
network content. You might be able to get the
company to pay you to place the content
on your network if your network is big enough.
Few Linus servers + customized management software
+ RTP/RTSP + integration testings. It should be
ready for customers trials in 6 months.
The most technically difficult part may be
* The servers that scale to thousands to
hundred thousands customers.
* System integrations with DSLAM should be trivial.
IGMP v2/v3 might be needed.
* Set top integration should be simply.
Worst case might need minor changes in
Set top software.
But if you done similar projects before, they are
not that difficult.
