of appeal hand-written by the father. It's rough English translation is as
follows:
Please Save My Daughter
My name is Xiaoxing Su. I am from Shanghai, China. I just arrived the
United States about 10 days ago together with my wife and daughter.
My only child, Lijia Su is 19 years old. She is a very obedient, mature and
has a very good heart. Unfortunately, just two months after she started
college last year, she was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer called
Langerhans Cell Sarcoma. Her spleen and lymphatic system has been seriously
affected. Without immediate and effective treatment she could lose her life
very soon.
This trial is indeed very heavy for my wife and me to bear. We are
overwhelmed by grief over this situation. I could not imagine my daughter
dying so soon. We have cried so much. My wife immediately quit her job to
take care of our daughter. We searched all over for any well known doctors
who could treat her problem. However, we could not find anyone in Shanghai
and anywhere else in China that knew how to treat this rare disease. She is
the only case in Shanghai and all over China, there is no record of anyone
with this problem. Eventually, the Shanghai Cancer Hospital and Shanghai’s
Children’s Medical Center started treating her using the standard treatment
for lymphomas. She underwent 10 months of strong chemotherapy. Although
there was some improvement, her condition is still not good. She frequently
would have fevers and her blood count would drop. Her blood platelet count
is only one fifth of a normal person’s platelet count. This causes her to
have red spots all over her body. Her white blood count is only one eighth
of normal. Thus, she easily catches infection. Her spleen is oversized,
her leg muscles have started to atrophy. The side effect of chemotherapy
has been her inability to move around much and she is very fragile.
Eventually, the doctors in Shanghai gave up on her treatment saying that
they no longer knew how to treat her. This is understandable because they
have never seen such a case before.
After much difficulty, we found out that Johns Hopkins Hospital treats this
form of cancer. In particular, Dr. Arceci is considered the world reknown
expert who has successfully treated children with this disease. Dr. Arceci
agreed to treat my daughter. That gave us hope that my daughter’s life
would be saved. We borrowed money using our home as collateral, took all
our savings and traveled to the US to come to Johns Hopkins just to find out
that what we have will not be enough. In the first few days, some of the
necessary preliminary medical examinations already cost us more than half of
our money. One type of screening cost almost $8000 which is about
$60,000RMB, more than my one year salary. My wife and I are desperate. My
daughter has not begun treatment and we are out of funds already. Dr.
Arceci says that my daughter must have her spleen removed as soon as
possible before he can proceed with cancer treatment. This will cost a lot
of money. Where will the money come from? We are unable to sleep and have
no appetite just worrying about this. We feel that we are at the end of our
wits. We appeal to any kind- hearted people to help us to save our
daughter’s life. We will forever be grateful.
Thank you.
Xiaoxing Su and Duanfen Ren
