monalisa was the one frequently "recreated" by many contemporary artists. it sort of revealed the different social contexts behind the famous works at each re-creation.
no one cares about nobles and their values any more. the techniques to present detaisl are not highly valued in the past 100 years or so either. today, people value more on the
originality in conceptual perspectives.
the first time i hear of his name was when i was a elementary student: for the first time i got a book on the golden division!
then i began to search for more publications on him (backthen there was no public library, we had to ask people we knew and just to get our hands on whatever happened to to around from private collections survived the cultrial revolutions..) so i realized he was the the best on sketches...
I also later saw some DVD on BBC documentries about da vinci
the reason i think we need to mention his name because he was the single most important guy of the times of renaisance, the mos timportant era of western visual arts, as i see, prior to the french impressionism.
there is also some background that was not mentioned but i think important: this was the time that technically there were more oil colors available, so the artist then had more choices
on their pallets, as compraing to the paintings before them (mostly brown in tones as chinese artist later referred to as "soy souce" works)
not only that, da vinci him self was more of an engineer than an artist. (perhaps that was why he was thought to be the least proliferating artist: all his life, his works known to the world, not to count on his notes or sketches, were within 40 pieces as we know of, if my memory on this serves me correctly) most of his inventions were later proved could have been working, if resources were given (refer to the BBC documentary on the experiements done by the British royal army on his otherwise helocopter and army tank designs...)
i am guessing this was partially why the book author used the name to attrack attentions. however, da vinci was known to use many symbles to secretely hint on the things that otherwise not noticed by viewers. many studies his works would love to point out what they know as background stories and relate that to the works. with those researches and findings, they would establish certain relationships between what da vinci's portraits and the parties commissed him to do the work...some famous romantic stories outside the marriages...this was perhaps more of "da vinci's codes"
in fact, like petr chaichovski, da vinci was a gay, and his lover was the boy supposed to follow him in apprentice. so we know he wouldnot really have done much nude studies on female bodies with true appreciations.
being a love child, it was sad for him missed out on much love,
but that also gave him the courage in his time to dive into the unknown world: da vinci was perhaps the first one performed many atonomies and what was why he was so great in artistic atonomy. his pbulications on those are still in the acdemic education series for art students today. that may have some to do with the fact he never trusted anyone in his life time. da vinci always wrote backward in his private notes. (back then only a few noble families owned mirrors so few could read his own notes) it was some sort of coding practice before the patent law was in practice in his times in italy.
why there were not no out door subjects in his times until the french impressionists?
well, the industrial times had some to do with the change of tastes among the artists ahead of his society of his own times, while the other factor was until then, the oil color in paste was not invented and it was quite a hassel to bring the minerals outside and mix them out door. the french impressionists, began from shortly before their time, had the access to paste contained colors in more choices, and they began doing what used to be color studies most of the time outdoor.
then scientifically, they found the invisible colors other did not see: technically, the color changes tones in reflection of lights and shadows...thye were obsessed by the amazing changes in lights and shadows and embarked on a journey...
you see, this is where technology and science play a hand to interfere with arts, and the times:
gogin back to the earlier post which i mentioned fresco works left by ancient human society members, given what they had as materials and tools and the skills they developed based on that, da vinci had a lot to play with. but then monet and the few others had even more.
the fresco basically functioned to have recorded the life styles
of then. da vinci was commissioned to have done the works for churches, the nobles and monarchies, basically served the special interests to ahve promoted the religions, the fake hero stories of the noble families, while he just challenged himself in his own capabilities to tell stories in technically precise terms.
xu bei-hong was shocked by the skills of the precisely likeliness in western school of visual arts when it came to his exposure. he went for it without any preservation. and that was the base of the modern chinese art of western media, the academic system established by him and lasted to this day, when it was down with some almost 50 years ago in the west. this is why i call xu' a backword art educator.
for those of you have access, check into publications on
chang yu, the guy was truly a talent and a great artist.
too bad he is not well known in china today. he went to paris at the same time with xu, and fought him all the way. (he also tried hard to get attention from xu's wife, who he said xu was not giving any attention to..)
