he was one of the few American Admir.s actually visited the Jap Navy before WWII. He had very high admiration of the Jap Navy commander, and he personally admired only three Admir.s in the world one is the Brit and the other is the jap.
Nimiz believe the American Navy was not going to be an equal rivalry of the jap navy. he had been studying the jap naval combat theories and eventually paid off in WWII.
The Jap navy commander also knew well about the American navy and did not think what he had was a good match for the u.s. counterpart. he was reluctant to fight the us navy but had no choice. he predicted that with the good deployment of surprise, the jap would win the first 6 month and then to take a down turn...the war played out just as he predicted.
admir.nimiz actaully raised fund to restore the flag ship of the jap admir, after WWII, we see how much admiration Nimiz had for his rivalry.
Roosevelt had no part of this except for he was a guy said yes and took all fucking credits. but we are talking about the pro.s here!
