Change is good. Always good -- as long as it's carefully meditated and well executed.
I suggest though, you move up your career a bit to a management position in the US before you come to China. Stay on such a position for a year or two then come back. You can be a very good IT manager if that's what you are interested in -- I never think a person without real coding or handson experience can be a good manager in IT. Management should be new life for you and you will find it very rewarding -- at least that's very true to me. Building up a healthy and happy team and motivate them through hard and innovative projects can make you see your true value. As a techie, you've got pretty much all that's there for you; but as a manager, it will be the begining of new horizon. I declined a $100/hour offer and came to China for a management position and I love this work the best.
As far as your LP plan, play it by ear. I failed. My suggestion is you need to adjust your value system. Find happiness first -- whereever and however. Do not place your happiness upon love. Should be able to lead a happy life without love. You may be lucky to find a good one -- hope you are, yet I would be very careful in that regard.
