Walmart's business strategy is everyday low cost. However, as my previous post indicated, its competitive advantage is economy scale and small captive customer. Without these competitive advantages, its low-price strategy would not work. Like airline, walmart is in service too. Remember how walmart started, they concentrated in Arkansa first before expanded into other areas. But Dell does not have any COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES. 1) Dell does not have proprietary technology
2) Dell does not have economy of scale. They have 5 factories around the globe. Although they are big, they are not the biggest.
3) No captive customer. Do you buy dell's computer because it is dell's. Or you buy their computer because it is cheap.
4) No special resource.
Dell enjoys low cost leadership because it smartly figured out a new business model: selling computers on-line not through re-sellers which dramatically reduce their operating expenses. But how much further can they go with this smart business model?
I have explained my points as much as I can. I guess I will not convice you. So this will be my last post on this topic. before I go, let me just say one last thing for you to think about.
Why chinese companies such as Haier and lengend spending tons of money trying to build a brand. Brand means customer base which is one of competitive advantages.
It is nice to have some exchanges like this. Cheers
