the biggest risk of one month option is time is against you quickly, if stock trade sideway, your lose time value quickly, although one month option price is the cheapest, sounds cheap, hehe...of course if you bought the right bet, your position will explore...it is pure gamble, not my style, i do buy leaps or 3-6 month option.
i wouldn't hold any stock without hedge, the point to buy put option is to prevent accident, if xhb fall hard from $14, your can take the profit from puts, and still hold the stock , or like your said simply buy Jan $14 call, or spread.
in current market, any naked option positon is too risky, i'm scared to hold anything but vxx,
