I guess Madame Rong lives in Vancouver, thus only sees the rosy pro-Asia version of Canada.

--Should be Alberta. Not Canada. Canada has only two provinces rich in oil and natural gas. One is the offshore sites at Newfoundland, the other is Alberta. Newfoundland serves only the east coast (no further than Ontario) and Alberta served mainly US and West Canada.

Canadians are not shrewd businesspeople. First, there is division and huge cultural difference between English Canadians and French-speaking Quebecors. The latter do not give a shit about profit, market share or more income, except for arts, fashion, romance, independence and more federal welfare subsidy disguised as so-called "equalization payment". Second, the Albertans are weird America-obsessed people whose pipelines only link Albertan gas and oil to the American market.

Canadians never seriously consider supplying their oil and gas to Chinese. It is just so obvious if one looks at the pipeline map. They seem never consider diversifing their customer portfolio or encourage the competition among suitors. Despite their contempt of Americans (call them ignorant, stupid, red-necked...), they still prefer kiss American ass than serving China for a better price of their natural resources.

In the media, (Globe and Mail and CBC, CTV) there is conspicious sense of superiority and contempt over Chinese, among both the English-speaking population and French one, even if right now China is a very promising market to uplift the value of its natural resources and thus the income for average Canadians.

Overall, self-righteousness really overshadows business sense and lots of decisions just do not make business sense. In comparison, Americans are much more flexible and practical, esp., various Republican administrations.

The Lai ChangXing issue really makes Canada the haven for crooks and its legal system the laughing stock. Of course, I admire Canadian's repsect of human rights. But Americans are much smarter in comparison.

加国如不对中国国有企业如中石化等予以格外限制,相信定会吸引到中方巨量能源投资;
--According to G&M, CTV and CBC, that's invasion of Red Communist China.
If China is smart enough, invest in mid-east. Alberta oil is too costly for extraction. The heavy oil needs costly refinery before it can be used. In comparison, mid-east oil is more pure, lighter and much cheaper for refinery.

Alberta is actually richer in natural gas. But Canadians only want to sell to Americans at dumping price...

教育--keep in mind, all universities are public. I saw little incentive for expansion, profit or global impact. Many universities are not much better than the state-owned Chinese enterprises back in China. They are NO competitor to the top tier private schools in US, not even to some top tier public research universities in US--even though those schools are well-known for bureaucracy.

---America is still the focus. Or in Quebec, the French market or Syrian market. Never seriously interested in China. You just need to read their reports to understand their mentality. Canadians are not Dutchmen.

I recently read the tourism bureau's reports. America is still Canada's obsession in terms of marketing effort.

---will not happen. Deeply in their heart, Americans are still the masters. The gov. does little in adjustment (the Free Trade Agreement with EU is still not finalized). Little interest in Asian market.

--most is natural resource export. To be frank, Canada is just like the raw material colony of America.

I saw little interest in new tech in the eastern Canada. Most of the eastern Canada is experiencing gradual de-industrialization now(including Ontario). The future of Canada is the West.

---Harper is a good manager. He is actually quite practical. If he is born in America, he could be a great political leader. He does not treat China well, not because 却是意识形态捆绑经贸,but because US-Canada economic tie is much stronger than the China-Canada tie.

Canada pretty much has lost its monetary policy independence and fiscal policy independence--just check the BOC announcements and Fed Reserve announcements. All Canadian cities are closely tied into the US economy. The benefit from Sino-Canada trade is still limited and incremental benefits do not justify a fundamental policy change.

When Chinese average income (not that meaningless GDP per capita) reaches certain level and Chinese become the final consumers of various manufactured goods, you will see a fundamental change in Sino-Canada relationship.
