Having a weak, divided, but still prosperous democratic neighbor is in America's best interests. America gets a reliable ally and eliminates a potential competitor.
It is dangerous to have two equally strong, militaristic, ambitious and democratic large nations as close neighbors. Two thousand years ago, it happened between Rome and Carthage, ending up with bloody results. In the last 150 years, such situations (France-Prussia, Germany-UK) brought us two world wars.
If one visit Nova Scotia or New Brunswick, you will notice that most strongholds were built by the British to defend POSSIBLE AMERICAN invasion!!! The potential tension was not fully resolved until FDR became the Depression savior and solidly locked Canada into the Pax Americana system.
In any happy and peaceful marriage, there must be one manly partner and one femine partner. The current Canada-US partnership is in the best interests of both nations.
For many Chinese Canadian citizens, it is a pride to be a Canadian since a divided nation has to protect the French minority, as well as other multicultural elements in Canada---thus national division indirectly results in better protection of minority right or culture.
That's why many Arabics, rich or poor, flocked from "the Land of the Free (US)" into Canada.
A less competitive Canada is also in Chinese's favor: in America, one needs to put 120% effort there just to keep a job; while in Canada, you just needs to put 60% effort there and one has already beats all Canadian colleagues in terms of diligence.
加拿大还是比美国不可救药的落后--I call this national choice. I saw that in France, in Spain, Italy, Germany... America is God's most favored nation now. There will be only one America on this earth.
