I will pay $0.03, you (tax payer) will pay $0.97. If this stock makes money later, I will take 20% of total profit, you will take 80%. If the darn thing goes to toilet, I will take 3% of total loss, you will take 97%. This is just FANTASTIC. Mr. Green

I don't think anyone like that split of risk & reward -- except those "investors" who'll take the deal. But, the gov uses the excuse that "desperate times require desperate measures". We may not agree but they do, and they have the legal right to put that into action.

Now, what better measures could you propose? -- I'm not being sarcastic, rather I am being intellectually curious. (the reason I say "intellectually" here, is that, mine, or your, emotion matters little in this world, yet my intellect can at least help me to make better personal decisions, so I'd rather focus on the intellectual part than on the emotional part).

That said, what could unfreeze the credit market, i.e. make the banks to start lending? In your opinion?

During and after Japan's lost decade, many academics accused that the japanese system kept bad loans on banks' books for far too long, which delayed the expunging of toxic elements hence hindered rebirth of healthy banking that is the bloodpump of the economic system.

Were they right or wrong? -- no official verdict even yet.

Now, the U.S. is facing a similar banking crisis, apparently it is doing something dramatically different from what Japan was (accused of) doing: rid of the toxic assets off the banks, no matter how (which apparently you don't like).

Hence the more armchair question:
Should they do it? or should they not? Why?

Or should they do it in a different and of course better way? any ideas?

Maybe you just don't care Smile maybe you just want to let the fcuking feeling out of your chest -- it's ok if that is the case! Smile
