your post and the following comments remind me of the statement from current solicitor general in supereme court last year that america doesn't have a consistant policy toward different cultures.
It used to be the assimilation policy, obviously, another word of melting pot, which accompanied with bloody actions against minority ethnic groups. During the human rights movement, the policy shifted a little: america adopted what you mentioned above; but the WASP root has not been touched. After 60's choas, the general attitude shifted back to consevertive thinking, although the liberal thinking is still popular in acdemic world.
The irony is that, from an american perspective, we can say america has NOT progressed to the level of her counterparts in europe, while our legal system protects freedom of speech and thinking most in the world.
