in America, no--that's a set of core values and Americans encourage melting (or put in another way, conformity in certain fundamental values). On the east coast, you can feel that Italian Americans and Eastern Europeans are still not as respected as other English/Scotish/German Americans.
Ask you friends there, they will tell you.
I lived in both Europe and America and I can fully understand your perspective. Actually Canada is very similar to Europe.
But America is different, it is deeply based on WASP traditions.
