Spend 1 out of 10 years on the buy side, the rest on the sell side, I'm not the super expert.
To my knowledge, there are 3 main FX functions on the buy side in trading -
1. FX trading which is limited to just hedging or cash management for a traditional mutual fund or asset management firm's cross currency portfolios.
2. There are few pure FX hedge funds and they are not doing so well. Of couse, the trading roles/traders are impacted negatively.
3. Even back in the early 90s, FX trading on the prop side in IBs as well as hedge funds is increasingly becoming part of the interest rate products group which includes both fixed income and FX, FX is not a seperate function any more. Inside UBS, for example, the prop desks are refered to as equities and interest rates, not equites, fixed income and FX.
FX desks at IB which purely serving as dealing and execution desk for corporate clients are not attacting top talent either.
For the reasons above, FX roles on buy side and sell side are not a promising area to launch a career.
Other experts might be able to shed more light on this subject.
