China Wind Power Co Eyes IPO To Expand; May List On Nasdaq

HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--Goldwind Science & Technology Co., China's largest wind turbine maker by market share, said Tuesday it is considering an initial public offering, possibly in the U.S., to fund its expansion.
Investment in alternative energy has increased in China recently, with the government promoting cleaner fuel to reduce pollution and a reliance on crude imports. The country plans to double the use of alternative sources of energy to 15% of its energy needs by 2020.
Goldwind, which is based in the northwestern city of Urumqi, has talked to several investment banks about arranging a listing, Goldwind Director Liu Tongliang told Dow Jones Newswires.
"We haven't decided on the listing destination yet. The picture will be much clearer in about a month," Liu said. He didn't say how much the company aims to raise from the IPO.
Another person from the company, who asked not to be named, said Goldwind would prefer to list its shares on Nasdaq, likely sometime next year. The investment banks that Goldwind contacted includes Morgan Stanley (MS), Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS), Deutsche Bank AG (DB), and Citigroup Inc.(C), the person said.
Nasdaq Stock Market Inc. (NDAQ) has attracted listings by some Chinese companies that want to attract a broader base of investors and gain more recognition from their international peers.
There are nearly 30 Chinese firms among the 3,200 companies listed on Nasdaq, including search engine Baidu.com Inc. (BIDU) and battery maker China Bak Battery Inc. (CBAK)
Nasdaq said Tuesday it has a strong lineup of Chinese companies that could list over the coming two years.
According to Goldwind's Web site, the company manufactures three kinds of wind turbines, with capacity ranging from 600 kilowatts to 1.2 megawatts. It also provides consultation on building and operating wind power plants.
Some of China's major power producers have expanded into wind power generation in recent years. China Huadian Group plans to invest CNY15 billion (US$1.88 billion) to build wind power plants in northwestern China, in what will be the largest wind power contract in the country, the official Xinhua News Agency reported in April.
China is the world's second-largest power producer, but only has wind power capacity of 1.2 gigawatts, or 0.2% of its total power capacity of 508 GW at the end of 2005.
It is targeting installed electric generation capacity from wind power of 5 GW in 2010, and 30 GW in 2020, said China's National Development and Reform Commission. The economic planning agency said China's installed capacity for wind-generated electricity was 800,000 kilowatts in 2004.
