programs such as Hope. I am not familiar with any nongovenment programs in China. But from my limited knowledge, besides individual ad hoc efforts in helping these unfortunate kids, systematic and methodical efforts within China are scant. This can partly attributed to the lack of tax incentives for individuals and corporations making this kind of donation.
In the States, there are some nonprofit organizations run by oversea Chinese, such as Rural China Education Fund (https://www.ruralchina.org/site/). But they have not been very successful in reaching out to the mainstream in the States and still very much rely on the support from local Chinese communities in various cities. Of course, if you are familar with other foundations with similar mission, please share the li<x>nks here.
A group of Chinese out of Boston has been working on a foundation for the same purpose, but with a goal of targeting the mainstream donors in the States. I will get the li<x>nk and post it here.
All in all, I do believe, as many of you would concur, that a lot more can be done and should have been done. Kids are innocent. The kids from the countryside should have access to the same education opportunities as those provided to the kids in the cities.
It is evident that the govenment has not placeed this on its priority list besides lip services. Private sectors are pitching in but coming slowly. More coordinated and organized efforts are called for.
