One that don't fit into the environment and make the best out of it can't play much better in the Chinese "game" either. I don't mean only achieving a lot (in terms of money) can be named "样子", needless to say bringing the money to China.
The fundamental difference between a conscious returning and an otherwise one is knowing what could be offered and having a plan, or might even including the exit strategy you mentioned in another post.
I second your idea of taking it as a business decision. It is indeed, in its nature.
