Thank you all for providing your thought and input. I wish this forum was there in 1997.
I have provided a few hints as to the real reason for turning down the GS offer, and hope someone will read between lines to catch it.
So here they are -
"The late" part was a minor consideration. I accepted the apology on the spot and GS made its way to do it twice more. Bridge was not burn on both sides.
The major consideration was:
GSAM is a buy side business of Goldman. I was a sell side guy (trading/computer model/execution) in the equities derivatives area at SBCWarburg. So there is a fit question.
The manager who I will be reporting to does not give me the comfort I was looking for. The manager does not seem to be self secure enough to put up with a aggresive and "arrogant" guy like me. Someone at GS later told me, after I declined the offer, the manager resigned two month after. I guess Goldman figured it out and took steps to remove the manager so they can attract the talent they need.
I also consulted with my mentor and a couple of trusted friends at SBC/UBS and GS, they all support my decision.
I made the decison I feel happy with.
Whatever you do in life, happiness is priceless.
