Re: [svcef] Lessons learnt by doing a startup
Thank you for sharing.
I learned #4 a hard way through the project I have been working on. We spent 4-5 months trying to get VC funding with no progress on development side, but ended up trying to grow our business organically.

Hi, Friends:
I want to share the lessons I have learnt from doing a startup.
These lessons are still fresh from battlefield.
These lesson may not apply to everyone or any business, but I will
try to remember these lessons no matter which business I will do
next.
1. Work on something that you have long time passion.
This is important, because you are going to work on the subject for
at least 4 or 5 years. Sometime, there are some fields that look
promising and with gold there, many people try to jump into the
field. Do NOT jump in the fields unless you have passion for them,
because, often the promise is just illusion and the gold is just
something with yellow color.
2. Work on something in a fast growing field
Fast growing fields can tolerate lots of mistakes. And as a startup,
we will make mistakes. If the field is not fast growing, then one
mistake can cause the life of a startup.
3. Got top notch partner
Sometimes, we cannot get the best partner, we just settle with
anyone we can reach. This is bad. Your partner will be with you for
4-5 years, (they will be the most important people for you in these
years other than wife/husband). Just like marriage, sometime, better
not have a partner than have a partner which cannot bring value to
the team.
4. Do NOT get VC funding if possible
VC money is poisonous. First, it takes very long time (6 months) to
get their money. In these 6 months, there was almost no progress on
development side. Second, there was too much strings attached with
these money.
Try to grow business organically, try to generate revenue and be
positive at beginning.
That is the key lessons I have learnt (till next time).
