My background is a little bit different from the majority of the participants in this forum as I do not have a PHD or Masters degree. Ten years ago, I got a fully paid undergraduate scholarship to study for a Banking/Finance degree in Singapore. After graduation, I started working for a international bank in the Operations area. I have been a PR for roughly 6 years and I am single /28 years old. (My current PR permit allows me free entry to Singapore until 2012.) Having been here for so many years, I am quite used to the life in Singapore and does not have much complaint against the living standard /social environment here. I had always hoped to return to work in China one day as I am the only child in my family and I want to be near them as they are getting older. They have been to Singapore and am not used to the life here. The reason being that they do not speak English at all and they also could not understand Cantonese / Hokkien which is widely used by old-generation Chinese Singaporean.
I read some articles which said that the competition in China's job market is very fierce for overseas returnees and the situation is expected to be even worse in the coming years and I want to go back to work in the financial service industry. Is it a good idea to quit my current job to go back and find a job in Shanghai / Shenzhen ?
I could not make up my mind now. If I quit, going back to Singapore to get another job is not easy as the economic downturn forced many companies to cut cost. Unemployment rate is high. If I decide not to go back, should I apply for citizenship? The chance of getting it is high. Emotionally I do not want to get rid of the Chinese passport although I know it is not welcome everywhere even in China.
