The screenplay co-writers got together and took votes from audience between episodes and then decided which direction to go.
E.g. originally co-writers kicked Mr. Big out of the show very early. However audience loved Mr. Big (you bet, them were females ) . The producers had to give Mr. Big a come back and let the furniture designer out of the game.
