Before jumping up and down, would you please read my post again? It talked about a common believe in the business world “business is all about perceptions”, and I didn’t “把一切问题归因于communication” as you suggested.
1. I don’t understand why you mentioned “中国大陆的名校才子型人才在美国职场反而不如汤加农场之子”
I didn’t talk about 汤加农场之子at all, who is 汤加农场之子???
2. I didn’t exclude the possibility of discrimination in ananlyzing my friend’s case.
when I talked about my friend’s case, I wrote “Assuming there is no serious discrimination issue, I think the problem is my friend didn’t know how to shape his boss’ perceptions.”
3. Difference between perception and communication:
Perception is the way you understand or think of something and your beliefs about what it is like. Communication is the process of speaking, writing etc., by which people exchange information.
One point I was trying to make was “How you dress, how you talk, how you present, and how you behave in various occasions determine how people see you in the business world.” Communication skill affects how people perceive you, but perception IS NOT communication.
4. I didn’t say :” 中国人教育的问题出来的都是书呆子”
What I wrote was :” Communication has been an issue for MANY (NOT ALL都是) Chinese struggling in the American corporate jungles” “Back in their school years in China, people didn’t value communication skills, and they didn't have such trainings.” I think you are misleading people by saying I claimed “出来的都是书呆子”. “Lack of good communication skills” is not equal to “书呆子”
5. I used 2 stories in the post, the first one was about an Amercian colleague, the second one is my Chinese friend. Communication is also an issue for my Amercian colleage.
6. Business communication issue in the US IS NOT speaking English with accent. Many Indians speak English with strong accent, but they deliver the messages to the audience effectively.
Does it help if we simply ignore that Chinese, on average, don't have good business communication skills? Acknowledging imperfection is the starting point for improvement, ignoring will not help to improve.
One lesson I learn is, try not to use English to address sensitive issue, some people might interpret it differently.
