versions of Unix. They all had their chips, including design and manufacturing, plus their own system architectures to power those OSs, some still do.
From today's perspective, those companies tried to own too many stacks.
In the end having strong focus and identifiying core business value are key to success in a fast moving industry. When spread so thin over many costly areas, it's just difficult to be leaders in all them.
Thanks to an outsider's involvement, IBM changed direction early, including abandoning AIX in favor of Linux, and is able to survive and thrive. SGI and prob. Sun just can't seem to turn the corner.
