it was only available to rich people. It became widespread starting from 70s in US.
continental Europeans do not like to use credit card that often as in US. At least when I was there in late 1990s, I did not see the wide use. But if one travelled from one country to another one, credit cards are very helpful. ATM card has many limitations.
