letter of resignation to your new boss since they know one another on a personal basis. Still, it is a little weird to me.
Because of the fact that two bosses know each other, you may need to draft a combination letter of "appreciation"/resignation stating how appreciative you are for having you there.... It is the hardest decision to leave this company, blah, blah, you know, some cliche English mingled with your somewhat true feelings/sincerity towards the old firm. You will try your very best to make arrangement and smooth handover before your departure, so forth. 
For instance, this letter of ... is to inform you that an opportunity has presented itself that will enable me to work in the area of my stated preference, which is (rocket science or private equity funds) I am therefore tendering my resignation from your company and wish to advise you that the effective (date) will be ..... I will turn in or deliver all property of the company in my possession by the date....
Normally I would write you a letter back as Acceptance of Resignation
Dear 阿岁,
It is with deep regret that I accept your resignation as CFO of ABC Corp. I can appreciate the demands that this position has placed on you, and appreciate all of the fine contributions you have made to the growth of our company. I wish you all the best of luck.
