As to the collapse of Lucent and Nortel, the investment community has already provided the conclusion -- incompetent management. It has nothing to do with technology.

I suspect that you've never worked for Lucent US before. Bell Labs is more of a marketing term. Just like anywhere else, < 10% of people there are smart. The rest of them are just average. And a certain amount of those Bell Labs people are stupid. I've met DMTSs that were totally useless. Bell Labs has not produced any great ideas for quite some time. The management tried to copy Cisco's B&D (Buy and Develop) model. However, every acquisition Lucent made during the hay days was like flushing billions of dollars down the toilet. Basically the executives at Lucent destroyed the company, not the technology.

As to Huawei, we will see. When they advertised that the average age of their engineers is 28, I laughed. Copying competitors' products may get them a head start, but copying will never make them No. 1. Without inventing its own technology, Huawei is at most just a successful sweat shop specializing in copying.
