MGM to Establish Theme Park in Pusan

Travis J. Rutherford, left, MGM executive vice president, Pusan Mayor Hur Nam-sik, center, and Glovit Inc. Chairman Lee Seong-yong join hands at Grand Hyatt Seoul, Wednesday, after signing a memorandum of understanding on a project to build an MGM theme park in the southeastern port city.
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), one of the largest Hollywood movie companies and theme park operators, will set up a Hollywood-style amusement park in South Korea's southeastern port city of Pusan.
MGM, Pusan City, and Korean agency Glovit, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) Wednesday to establish the movie theme park ``MGM Studio City'' on a tourism complex site in the city's Kijang County.
Pusan Mayor, Hur Nam-sik, and seven MGM officials including Travis Rutherford, MGM's executive vice president, took part in the signing ceremony at the Grand Hyatt Seoul.
It is the first time for the film production company to set up a theme park outside the U.S.
``We'll expect five million annual visitors by establishing an entertainment venue where people can enjoy various leisure and shopping facilities not only in the daytime but also at night,'' Rutherford said.
The MGM Studio City will be comprised of seven zones including leisure facilities, shopping centers, restaurants and accommodations on 300,000 pyong (990,000 square meters) of land.
The center of the complex will be MGM Studio Park, where visitors can experience the filming process featuring MGM produced movies, similar to that at Universal Studios in Los Angeles.
The other zones include the shopping venue, Hollywood Way; the Hollywood Hotel; the Film Academy where people can learn about filming; and an amusement park called Thrill Park.
Construction will start in late 2007 with a 700 billion won investment from MGM. The city plans to open the park in early 2011.
After the opening of the theme park, the U.S. company and Pusan City will consider building an additional water park and hotels with 2,000 rooms with an investment of more than 300 billion won, if the first park is financially successful.
Pusan City and MGM will have discussed detailed development of the amusement park by the middle of July.
The city expects the park will create 30,000 jobs and earn 2-2.5 trillion won in profits annually.
``We expect the MGM Studio City will help the tourism complex in Pusan to become a leader of tourism in Northeast Asia along with Universal Studio in Japan and Disneyland in Hong Kong. We will give full support to the establishment of the park,'' Mayor Hur said.
MGM is one of the world's seven major movie companies. It produces various genres of movies and television soap operas for world distribution.
It also operates theme parks, including Disney MGM Studio, one of the Walt Disney World's five theme parks in Orlando, Florida.

Hollywood's MGM plans South Korean theme park
By Jon Herskovitz
SEOUL (Reuters) - Hollywood studio MGM plans to bring its roaring lion trademark to an Asian tiger economy by opening its first overseas theme park in South Korea, officials said on Wednesday.
Officials from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the southern South Korean port city of Pusan and South Korean entertainment company Glovit signed a memorandum of understanding to build the MGM theme park.
The park in Pusan will face stiff competition from two popular theme parks in the Seoul area, Disney parks in Tokyo and Hong Kong as well as a Universal Studios theme park in Osaka.
Glovit Chairman Lee Seong-yong told a news conference it would cost about 1 trillion won ($1.02 billion) to construct MGM Studio City and said the company expected to complete the project in four to five years.
MGM is not making an investment in the park but does have the option to purchase a 5 percent to 10 percent share, Lee said.
MGM officials said details of the park were still being worked out but they expect it to have some 27 attractions, hotels, shops, a film academy with movie sets and an entertainment school.
MGM, home of the James Bond and Pink Panther movies, will provide its creative energy to the project as part of a licensing deal. Pusan is providing breaks on taxes as well as the land for the park.
"We do expect that this project will be very viable to many Korean consumers," said Travis Rutherford, an MGM executive vice president, who declined to give projections for attendance.
Pusan Mayor Hur Nam-sik said he thought the park could attract as many as 5 million people a year.
The estimate may be a bit optimistic considering recently opened Hong Kong Disneyland, built at a cost of $1.8 billion, is expected to draw 5.6 million visitors in its first year. Hong Kong's population is nearly twice as large as Pusan's population of 3.7 million.
The largest non-Disney theme park in Asia, Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, has reported several years of losses since opening in 2001. It attracts about 8 million visitors a year.
Tokyo Disneyland, operated by Japan's Oriental Land Co. Ltd., is one of Asia's top tourist sites and, with the adjacent DisneySea, draws about 25 million visitors a year.
Seoul city government officials said last September they had been in talks with Walt Disney Co. about opening one of its theme parks near the South Korean capital.
In April last year, an investor group led by Sony Corp. of America, a division of Japan's Sony Corp., acquired MGM for around $3 billion in cash, plus debt assumption.
