I watched the documentary "Shanghai Ghetto" before, and 99.9% of Jews attributed their survival to lenience of the Jap and their self-help. Throughout the movie, I heard the complaint about the dirty infrastructure back in Shanghai at that time. This article is an exceptional case. I talked to several Jews in US, all of them had no clues about Shanghainese helping them in the past. A German called Schindler, who saved a few hundred, was now world-famous, but the Chinese who allowed in 50,000 Jews and helped them to pass the crisis were almost forgotten in all people's memoir.
It is true that after Hitler gained control of Germany, US shut down the immigration door against Jews in Europe. Only a few hundred legally entered US for that time period, even though the secretary of treasury under Roosevelt was an American Jew himself. US was not a nice country to Jews until 1960s, when civil rights movement changed completely the yardsticks of "political correctness". －－Evidence: documentary firm－－Holocaust.
