Sources suggest in Sep'03 when copper was below $1900, Liu sold 2yr extendable copper call strike $3300. By Sep'05 copper was already over $3600. The call was rolled over to December date in an effort to keep the loss on paper, only to exacerbate the situation when another round of short squeeze took off. Now cash copper is offered around $4320t. Rumor goes that total position is around 150-200kt so you do the math... His counterparty could be any one of the following: Morgan Stanley, Standard Bank and Sempra Metals.
Standard Bank was also in CAO mess and my best guess would be Sempra Metals.
If these here-say is true, this is nothing but another rogue trader making a bad bet on 2yr copper, induced by LME banks which have not followed KYC guidelines and been aggresive on credit. Remember in China only CSRC licensed entity can trade overseas futures. If I was Liu, I will disappear for the good.
