Asian Bounty
By ELIZABETH BERNSTEIN
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
May 6, 2005; Page W2
This week Li Ka-Shing, one of Asia's wealthiest businessmen, pledged one billion Hong Kong dollars (about US$128 million) to the University of Hong Kong. The university, which has about 20,000 students, hasn't decided how to use the gift, which is unrestricted.
GIFT OF THE WEEK
Mr. Li -- who never attended college, according to his charitable foundation -- is chairman of the Hutchison Whampoa international conglomerate, with businesses ranging from telecommunications and oil to perfume. In the U.S., the company is Priceline.com's largest shareholder. Mr. Li declined to comment.
Prof. Lap-Chee Tsui, vice chancellor of the university, says the gift came as a surprise. Mr. Tsui, who has known Mr. Li for years, says the businessman was a financial supporter of the Human Genome Organisation, which promotes collaboration between geneticists worldwide, when Mr. Tsui was the group's president a few years ago.
The Children's Miracle Network aids the Children's Hospital in Birmingham, Ala.
When Mr. Tsui became vice chancellor of the university in 2002, he asked Mr. Li for a donation, and the two men kept in touch.
The Li Ka-Shing Foundation says Mr. Li plans to give away about US$200 million, including this gift, this year. In January, he sold his shares in Canadian bank CIBC and donated the proceeds, about US$960 million, to set up a North American branch of the foundation.
