2/8 eve. Family dinner at 4-star Best Western, an over RMB2000 set menu for 10 people, plus 红包3X300元 for my grandchildern's second cousins.

Also watching CCTV shows in the hotel's private dining room up to 1am.

2/9 RMB2000 tip to get one of my best to excuse herself for being away from home. Since nobody stays at hotel that nite, 5-star hotel will only be RMB298 net plus two breakfast.

2/10 Banquet at a 4.5-star hotel for 12 former/current English corner participants (4 M and 8 F):

A. An HK University PhD candidate with full financial support from the university (telecom major)

B. A turtle from Canada (全奖硕士 with 653 of TOEFL), Procurement Manager of a US Fortune 500 company in Shanghai

C. An engineer working for Chongqing Power Bureau, was #1 in the 16000-employee company's oral English competition (At 29, he makes RMB80K/yr from the iron-bowl.)

D. Myself

===========================

E. Business Associate from Siemens Shanghai (she did not even finish her college, not pretty either)

F. A turtle from UK, among the first few going to UK and paying the high tuition by her parents. Now teaching in a 3rd class college in Chongqing. Fluent English, rarely heard among the UK returners in Chongqing

G. A receptionist at Shenzhen Shangri-La's front desk, formerly at Chongqing Marriott's VIP customer services.

H. Beauty Queen of a 3rd class college in Chongqing, now workng in Shanghai

I. One of the three Chongqing contestants advanced to 2003 CCTV oral English competition in Beijing, now working at British consulate Chongqing's visa section

J. My high school alumna, but graduated 37 years later. just graduated from a local art college

K. A quiet English major working in a kindergarten

L. A tourism major with 7.0 in IELTS Speaking

It is a subtle matchmaking dinner.

2/11 Thai dinner with a senior high school junior and her mother. The girl was selected to be the only one representing Chongqing's 2.5 million high school students to make a speech on Chongqing TV.

To encourage my English corners' participants, I frequently write promissory notes with my signature to award them 5-star hotel meals or cash if they can get certain scores in their future study.

She is the first one ever winning my prize (How about RMB10000 for 7.5 in IELTS? Mission impossible!)

2/12 still open

2/13 Hot pot with my 20+ high school classmates (They complained the 5-star hotel meal I treated them last Chinese New Year was not something they are used to have. They said they prefer everyday meals)

I also booked a deluxe KTV room in a 5-star hotel afterwards to have a 宋祖英-like singer sing the songs old Chinese like.

She used to be a singer in 成都军区战旗文工团.

2/14 Valentine's Day.

While I am probably on many's preferred lists, I am not the first one on anyone's list coz I am commitmentphobia.

Of course, there are pretty ones who do not have any Valentine, but I am too old to call them. Worse yet, even if anyone of them called me (it did happen!), I cannot say yes coz it would then mean I had not had any engagement for the day until she callled -- losing my face entirely!

How would I solve this once-a-year dilemma? Well, I will report back to u after the day.

2/15 visit my parents with my family members [cemetery]

2/16 English corner resumes and pick up my 1-year Z visa with multiple entries from PSB (Gosh, the policewoman sitting at the foreigners' desk is even better than 邱淑贞 in all aspects -- figure, face and class!!! For that reason, I kept renewing my visa every three months until I had to leave China every 30 days due to the Sino-American fingerprint incident - it was resolved last month.)

In general, Chinese New Year is tough to me coz 99% pay-and-plays go home (Even housekeepers triple their salary during this period.)

Happy Chinese New Year!
