company is the team, the knowledge that the team possesses. It's hard to control once you bought the company.
what we did was, to find a couple of small companies that in the same industry/similiar product. sign contract with them to make a implementation partner. you control the core knowledge of the product and let them do the implementation, support, marketing (they might have existing customers) or other stuff. after a while, you will know each other better, if they are right for you, you can buy the company, if they are not, just stop the partnership. this way, the risk is not very high. you will find lots of implementation partners are not as good as you think. you don't want to do business with them. But you can find a few good ones. also, the chioce is two-way, they might not like you either.
