According to my own experiences,
You need to
1) know the entrepreneur well, especially integrity
2) believe he has got the right technology and experiences
3) know your exit
4) make sure you can afford to lose the money
In your case, you seem like buying a job for yourself. Don't join the company unless he ask you to do so. Investing in the company doesn't give you the right of employment. Don't have the illusion that he is going to share leadership with you. You let him drive. It's his company and his baby. If you don't trust that he can drive by himself, don't invest.
You might just as well join his company as a consultant first, even work for free for sometime. Then you get a realistic view of his business. This is actually a nice way of doing due diligence. In this way, you invest your time and experience first, without putting in any money. The water in China is quite treacherous. Be extra careful when to part with your money.
In short, I invested in a software startup here as an angel. They successfully raised venture capital afterwards. They got acquired by a public company and my shares became liquid. Sounds like a success, eh? My investment is still underwater.
But it's a great experience. The founders really gave their heart and soul to the company. I had no regret in backing them.
Another option is, think about starting your own business. Start from scratch has its own advantage.
