Not that many people can afford his/her gut in real life, only those with means, those entrepreneurs or those criminals can.
Most still have to work for a paycheck. Following gut is a remote possibility in most situations. No trucker is following his gut on a 10-hour trip; and no Chinese worker in sweatshops is following her gut. Even most white collars are making a miserable living in a sense.
Like what is preached in 'Poor dad, Rich Dad', the reality is that most people have to rely on selling their time/attention to make a living.
I don't mean one should not follow his gut, what I mean is that it's rather a useless or harmful motto for 90% of the population.
