Turns Out The "Trader" Who Scared The Bejeezus Out Of BBC Viewers Was Just Some Guy Living In His Girlfriend's House
Here's what we know: Alessio Rastani is a guy who went on the BBC. He said that the recession was coming, that European leaders couldn't stop an EU crises, and that "Goldman Sachs rules the world." Then everyone went nuts trying to figure out who the heck he was.
We tried too, of course. After all, what he said was controversial if not shocking, so the race was on to discredit him.
Late yesterday, The Telegraph delivered the knock-out punch:
In the interview Mr. Rastani described himself as an independent trader. Elsewhere he claims he's an "investment speaker". Instead of operating from a plush office in Canary Wharf Mr Rastani works and lives with his partner Anita Eader in a £200,000 semi in Bexleyheath, south London. The house, complete with a mortgage from Royal Bank of Scotland, belongs to her not him.
They go on to say that Mr. Rastani actually owns a public speaking business and admitted to being a part time trader and full time "attention seeker." Worst part: he's got about $1,542.70 in the bank and his trading assets are $15,737.17 in the red.
Definitely not a professional.
But what he said resonated with people, that's true regardless of whether or not he's ever been authorized to trade by England's Financial Services Authority (he hasn't). And he was given the forum to say it. That's another issue, and here's what the BBC had to say about it.

"We've carried out detailed investigations and can't find any evidence to suggest that the interview with Alessio Rastani was a hoax. He is an independent market trader and one of a range of voices we've had on air to talk about the recession."
