The only survivor was her eldest son Leshaun, 10, who escaped by climbing over his mother and out the window next to her before the car went under.
But he told authorities that, as he escaped, his mother dramatically snatched at his leg before letting go.
Leshaun said his mother was saying 'I made a mistake. I made a terrible mistake' - and was trying to reverse the car out of the river - as it sank deeper into the murky water.
Newburgh police detectives were investigating a possible l<x>ink between the deaths and an argument Armstrong had shortly before she drove the van into the water with Jean Pierre, a Westchester County man who was the father of the three youngest children, according to a USA Today story.
Police confirmed that Pierre was charged with child endangerment in February when one of the boys who died in the minivan was found wandering the streets half naked after 1 a.m., the story said.
